A serious accident happened on the inner ring road in Wezembeek-Oppem on Tuesday morning. One seriously injured driver, a man in his fifties, had to be freed from his vehicle by the fire brigade and is in life-threatening condition.

Around 10.30 am, a vehicle, a truck and a van collided in unclear circumstances just after ramp 2 from Kraainem and Wezembeek-Oppem. “The truck became obstructed and partially blocked the Ring,” explains fire brigade spokesman Wouter Jeanfils. “The driver of the truck was slightly injured. The driver of the passenger car, who was 200 meters away, had to be freed. He was seriously injured and was taken away.”

Federal Police spokeswoman Jana Verdegem confirms that the driver of the vehicle was taken away in life-threatening condition.

The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office has appointed a traffic expert to determine the precise circumstances of the accident. The vehicle allegedly first collided with the truck and then ended up against the van 200 meters further.

The Ring is currently still blocked over three lanes. Traffic has difficulty passing through and there are therefore long traffic jams. The driveway from Wezembeek-Oppem is also closed. It is recommended to take a detour. The disruption will continue for a long time.
