Olympia Wijgmaal takes final place for the Cup of Flemish Brabant at the expense of Boutersem United

The girls of Olympia Wijgmaal beat Boutersem United 4-1 at home in the semi-final of the Flemish Brabant Cup. For Olympia it was their first semi-final ever in this cup, Boutersem has already won it five times. At Boutersem, the injury of defender Anne Huybrechts and missing the 2-2 was crucial. The blue shirts did not let it get to their hearts and increased the score from 2-1 to 4-1 in the last 10 minutes.

At half time it was still 2-1, in the last ten minutes it evolved from 2-1 to 4-1. For the visitors, goalie Tessa Mertens was the woman of the match with many spectacular saves.

After a study round, the ball ended up at the far post at a corner, and Cuypers scored the 1-0. On the fifteen minute mark Boutersem responded with a shot at Van Velthoven’s goal, home goalie Wauters saved. At minute 23 the ball did not get away from the Wijgmaal defense after the green and white put good pressure. Substitute Wittockx took full advantage and scored the equalizer past Wauters, 1-1. Wittockx had come on in minute 12 for defender Huybrechts, who was having too much trouble with his calf and she was not the only one in her team who was struggling with that problem.

Just after the half hour, home player Wyns lashed out with a crossed shot, a huge save from Mertens. Simonet tried to score on the rebound, but Ector cleared the line. Wyns just couldn’t handle it. A minute later, Van Humbeeck shot towards goal, Wauters saved just under the crossbar. In minute 36 Goossens went through on the right and she isolated Borgions in front of goal, his decision went wide from the right crossing. Five minutes later, Wyns went for a walk on the right, goalie Mertens had to go far due to less positional play by the defense. She had to rush back to the goal, but it was already too late. Borgions had received the ball and finished in the far corner, 2-1 a few minutes before half-time.

After the break it was largely Olympia that did the talking.

In the second half Olympia pressed, and in minute 52 the first expression of this came in the form of a shot from Simonet. She fired towards the intersection, Mertens took the shot. On the other side, Van Velthoven seemed to be through, her attack was stopped. The ref ruled it was not wrong. Wijgmaal then increased the pressure and Boutersem tried on the counter.
