The Mortsel Council of Aldermen issues an unfavorable advice for the application for a new environmental permit for the airport in Deurne. Antwerp Airport’s current permit expires on June 17.
Due to the expiration of the environmental permit, the airport is applying for a re-permit. During the public inquiry, which ran until Friday, March 22, neighbors and organizations were allowed to submit comments and objections. Neighboring municipalities such as Mortsel can also provide advice and this is unfavorable for the city.
“Opinions are divided in the council of aldermen, just like among the Mortselaars, about what exactly should happen to the airport in the future. But we do agree that we cannot agree to this perpetual permit. For us, the permit application is clearly in conflict with a number of Flemish, federal and European rules, including the nitrogen decree,” says Alderman for the Environment Steve D’Hulster (Vooruit).
Temporary
For the council of aldermen, there can only be a temporary environmental permit. The Flemish government must also impose conditions to ensure that the airport complies with European, federal or Flemish legislation, such as environmental permits, nitrogen decree and spatial implementation plans. According to the city of Mortsel, binding agreements must be made about this, which must also be complied with.
“The permit application is also problematic from the spatial planning policy area. According to current regulations, the expansion requested in the permit is outside the zone and is therefore also a reason for the city to give unfavorable advice,” adds Alderman for Spatial Planning Livia Moreau (Open VLD).
