Ostend painter James Ensor (1860-1949) had a special bond with Brussels. The painter of the masterpiece ‘The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889’ studied in the capital, made a career as an artist and was a child of the Rousseau-Hannon family.
“Ensor corresponded extensively with the family and with his best friend Mariette Rousseau in particular. The letters show Ensor’s deep affection for Mariette and her family, and show the artist’s sensitive side,” say the KBR and the KMSKB.
The correspondence is vividly illustrated with drawings in watercolour, pencil, charcoal, pen and ink. “Mariette carefully preserved everything in a luxurious album. It is a lively time document that provides a fascinating insight into the vibrant city life of Brussels during the fin de siècle,” according to the KBR and the KMSKB.
Fungal biologist
The renowned Brussels fungal biologist Mariette Rousseau (1850-1926) was the sister of Edouard Hannon, developer of the famous Hotel Hannon in the Brussels municipality of Sint-Gillis. Husband Ernest Rousseau was professor of physics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
Over time, the collection of letters and drawings has become vulnerable and brittle. The paper between the drawings has soured and the binding has partly come loose. In total, the complete restoration of the album will cost 15,000 euros. To date, 1,500 euros have already been raised. “Every gift counts to preserve this valuable heritage for future generations,” say the KBR and the KMSKB.
