In June last year, 410 ATMs were counted throughout the Brussels Region. Only one ATM was counted in Vorst. There are also too few ATMs in the Sablon, the Marolles, the Sint-Job district in Uccle and the Ninovesteenweg in Molenbeek and Anderlecht. These are places with many shops, where it would be useful to have cash.

More than 2,000 people were asked for a large survey, including shoppers and retailers. Half of shoppers are satisfied with the number of ATMs. Entrepreneurs are even less likely to be satisfied.

The research shows that cash is still widely used. Eighty percent of people have cash in their wallets. Ninety percent of people have withdrawn money from an ATM in the past three months. Seventy percent of people have recently spent cash at a convenience store.

The research was conducted at the request of Barbara Trachte, Brussels State Secretary for Economic Transition (Ecolo). The intention is that the research will help banks choose where the new ATMs should be located.

New ATMs

A new ATM may soon be installed at two locations in Vorst. You can see where all ATMs are currently located via the website www.cash.be. You can also see where the new vending machines will soon be located.
