The Red Devils drew twice in the last international match. Now we are looking forward to the European Championship, but which selection will we bring to that tournament?
The Devils did not get further than 0-0 against Ireland after a poor performance. Against England, Domenico Tedesco chose almost his typical team and it was already a lot better. Arthur Vermeeren (19) was allowed to play for 90 minutes against the Irish.
Should Vermeeren fear for the European Championship?
He could not hide the fact that he currently barely gets around to playing at Atlético Madrid, which stole him from Royal Antwerp FC last winter. Philippe Albert saw that Vermeeren clearly needs more playing minutes. “Three months without playing in modern football, you feel that, as we saw on Saturday,” says Albert at the RTBF.
“He has made a nice transfer, but if he does not manage to significantly increase his playing minutes, he will have to cross the European Championship. If he had stayed at Antwerp, he would certainly have been in the 23.”
Lots of competition in midfield
What doesn’t help Vermeeren’s case is that there is a lot of competition in the Devils’ midfield. And that of players who spend much more time playing at their club. Albert’s call therefore seems completely justified.
Since his transfer, Vermeeren has only played three times for Los Rojiblancos, accounting for 83 minutes. Will that number increase drastically in the coming period?
