Following the appeals court ruling, Weinstein was transferred on Friday to the prison complex on Rikers Island, an island between Queens and The Bronx in New York City, not far from LaGuardia Airport. It is one of the largest prisons in America.

That transfer is said to have led to the problems that required “immediate medical follow-up”. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in New York, a prison spokesman said.

“It looks like he needs a lot of help, physically,” Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala told American news agencies. “His health is very bad, he is a wreck.” He suffers from high blood pressure and heart problems, among other things. He is undergoing all kinds of tests and is being kept under observation. According to his lawyer, he would be mentally sharp.

Weinstein has had health problems since the charges against him, his defense says. Not only heart problems, but also diabetes, sleep apnea and eye problems. When he is released from the hospital, he will have to go back to Rikers Island.
