A painful love affair came to an end in the Ghent court on Thursday. When a woman discovered her husband’s adultery, she began a hellish revenge campaign. According to the prosecutor’s office, she terrorized her husband’s mistress for two years. “She feared for her life.”
Terminate the lease on her home, file slanderous reports against her husband to the police in her name, send a powder letter… It is not even a complete list of everything a West Flemish woman had to endure in terms of severe harassment. For almost two years she was terrorized by a woman from Gavere.
The reason for the attack was jealousy and resentment. The victim had had an affair with the defendant’s husband. “When that deception came to light, she started an act of revenge,” the prosecutor explained.
The harassment went so far that the defendant ensured that the mistress suddenly had to appear in court for… harassment. The defendant had sent fake letters full of insults to himself, but signed with the victim’s name.
“My client has always stood strong and never sought confrontation,” the victim’s lawyer said. “But when she herself was falsely accused, a line was crossed. This attack was extremely far-reaching and she even feared for her life.”
Adultery
The East Flemish public prosecutor’s office, which prosecuted the woman, is demanding 20 months in prison and a 400 euro fine as appropriate punishment. The victim confronted the defendant in court. She asked for moral damages of 5,000 euros.
Tim De Keukelaere, lawyer for the defendant, tried to put the facts into context. “The man was adulterous quite early in the marriage. There was constant deception on his part. The relationship was turbulent and that time with Mrs. was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
The lawyer indicated that the harassment has stopped for two years and that his client admits her mistakes. The marriage to her husband is also finally over. She herself spoke at the hearing: “I only now realize that my behavior was wrong.”
