musicThe creative team around Joost Klein released something for the first time on Tuesday evening about the act that was built around the song ‘Europapa’. Creative director Gover Meit (36), who participates in the act, presented in a Dutch talk show that two of Joost’s friends will be on stage in Malmö. He also showed two fragments of old acts that provided inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Gover Meit is responsible for organizing the staging. He may not reveal much about what we can expect in Malmö, but he made it clear that it is not just a fun party act.

“I accidentally used the word ‘moon landing’ the other day, because I like to speak in metaphors. It was immediately translated into sixty languages. Let me put it this way: I still think that the enthusiasm we will experience is comparable to that moment,” said Meit.

Meit took Appie Mussa and Martijn van Eijzeren, alias Stuntkabouter, with her on Tuesday evening. They already appear in the clip of ‘Europapa’, but also get a role in the act in Malmö. What exactly they are going to do is still a secret. The staging has now been worked on for nine months, Meit said. “I still find it unbelievable that I was able to work on one thing for so long.”

“I drew inspiration from two acts from the Eurovision Song Contest. Joost is very good at giving things a double meaning. His music sounds very cheerful, but often also has an emotional, deeper layer. For me, exactly that combination is in these two acts.”

The first one Meit showed was last year’s Finnish entry: ‘Cha cha cha’ from Käärijä. He came second in Liverpool. “The fact that such a party act is a hit throughout Europe gave us self-confidence. We now also dare to show our own style more. But at the same time, this act told very little about the song, I actually still don’t know what it was about.”

The other entry that Meit used as inspiration is the winning entry from 2017. That year, the Portuguese Salvador Sobral won with the modest ‘Amar Pelos Dois’. “I think that is my favorite Eurovision act ever,” said Meit, who praised the fragility and sensitivity of that song. “How something small can be very big at a festival. We are now trying to add something to it.”
