Cost

This level of research and innovation requires adequate long-term policy and financing, the researchers say. After all, the refinery of the future is currently very expensive. The investment for one location amounts to 14 to 23 billion euros, the researchers estimate. If we want to replace all 615 refineries that are currently in operation over the next 25 years, it will cost 320 to 520 billion euros annually. “But of course local, short-term financial gains do not outweigh the global long-term sustainability gains,” says Vogt.

Connectors of the future

In addition to science, technology, adequate policy and financial support, we also need the people who will develop the plans, the researchers say. “Science and technology can come up with solutions, but society must embrace them,” says Weckhuysen. “That is why it is necessary to train scientists and engineers who work interdisciplinary and ensure that our solutions become reality. To train these connectors of the future, we have developed new educational programs at Utrecht University, such as the Da Vinci project. For a successful transition, we must continue to invest in science, technology and education over the next 25 years,” said Weckhuysen.
