The Stomach Liver Intestine Foundation (MLDS) has drawn up 3 spearheads for the new government. The foundation wants to bring forward the bowel cancer screening programme, cheaper fiber-rich food and more public toilets.

With the spearheads, the MLDS wants to promote healthy digestion for everyone and thus reduce the risk of various diseases. Firstly, the foundation wants the starting age for the bowel cancer screening program to be lowered to 50 years. According to the organization, this is expected to prevent at least 750 and probably 1,000 deaths annually in the long term.

Secondly, the MLDS advocates a structural price reduction of healthy and fiber-rich food. Think of vegetables, fruit and plant-based fiber-rich foods such as legumes. The average fiber intake in the Netherlands is half the recommended amount, while a fiber-rich diet can reduce the risk of colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, according to the foundation.

As a third spearhead, the MLDS mentions national regulations for sufficient public toilets. This must state that a public toilet is available every 500 meters in (shopping) centers and busy pedestrian areas. Currently, 1 in 4 people stay at home due to a lack of public toilets, according to the MLDS.
