I don’t know abroad, but here in the Netherlands I think it’s quite universal, right? My charging card works with every charger.

Your charging card for your lease car works at every charger. Once you cross the border it is useless.
Your charging card as a private person does not do that. You will need a mountain of passes.

By the way, this is still part of the growth process. I can still remember times when I simply took cash abroad because it was not yet self-evident that my bank card would also function there. That has all gotten better over decades. But that was also quite a process. Ultimately, all these companies only benefit from standardization, but unfortunately this cannot be fixed overnight.

Yes, there were times when you had to have a local valid payment method per country. That is quite different from a “valid local payment method” per (group of non-geolocal) charging stations.

And please note: No company benefits from this being standardized. Unless there is a huge surplus of charging stations, the charging station company is much better off if you can only charge with their charging card.

Legislators have often been the driving force behind standardizing payments. That is also necessary here.
