Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny (47) would not have been eliminated on the orders of President Vladimir Putin (71). The newspaper ‘The Wall Street Journal’ writes this based on the American secret services.

Navalny died on February 16 in the Siberian penal colony where he was serving a prison sentence of more than thirty years for “extremism”. According to the prison system, the 47-year-old opposition leader collapsed after a walk. Navalny’s loved ones, however, claim he was killed on orders from the Kremlin. Several European countries and the United States also point the finger at Putin. After all, Navalny was considered the president’s biggest opponent.

But ‘The Wall Street Journal’ now claims that Putin did not order Navalny’s murder. This is apparently evident from inside information from the American secret services CIA and NSA. The claim is based “on a series of reports, including classified intelligence, and an analysis of publicly known facts, such as the timing of Navalny’s death and how it overshadowed Putin’s re-election,” it said. The newspaper does not provide further details.

“Ridiculous”

Navalny was one of Putin’s main targets for years. In 2020 he was poisoned with the nerve agent novichok, which may also have been the work of the Kremlin. For this reason, Leonid Volkov, former political advisor to the opponent, calls the messages “naive and ridiculous”.

Putin himself has repeatedly denied that he had anything to do with Navalny’s death. Last month, the president claimed that he planned to release the opponent shortly before Navalny’s death. Specifically, Navalny would be swapped with Vadim Krasikov, a Russian hitman serving a life sentence in Germany.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has responded to the article by ‘The Wall Street Journal’, but does not seem to attach too much importance to it. “I wouldn’t say it’s high-quality material that requires my attention,” said Peskov, speaking of “speculation.”
