Google continues to make more and more money from its Cloud division. That department, which had been making a loss for years, made a profit of $900 million last quarter. Google’s revenue from YouTube ads and subscriptions also rose.

Google parent company Alphabet writes in the presentation of its quarterly figures for the first three months of 2024 that sales increased significantly in most areas. Total revenue rose from $69.8 billion in the first quarter of last year to $80.5 billion today. The biggest driver of that turnover remains advertising; these generated 46 billion dollars in search engine revenue.

The increase in turnover from YouTube advertisements is also striking; it rose from $6.7 billion to $8 billion. Revenue from user subscriptions also increased, from $7.4 billion to $8.7 billion. This concerns all user subscriptions, including those for Play Pass, for example. Alphabet makes no distinction between individual subscriptions in its quarterly figures.

The increase in both turnover and profit at Google Cloud continues. That trend started in the first quarter of last year, when Google made its first profit with its Cloud service. The company earned a relatively modest $191 million from this at the time. In subsequent quarters, the company continued to make profits from the cloud service. The total profit from that division has now risen to $900 million, on a total turnover of $9.5 billion.

Google is the largest cloud provider next to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, but its revenue figures are still insignificant compared to those other companies. Microsoft reported earlier today that Azure revenue this year amounted to $26.7 billion.
