Nissan wants to make electric cars more affordable

EVs will be just as expensive as cars with combustion engines in 2030

Nissan wants to make electric cars cheaper. That is one of the major goals that the brand has set for itself in a new and extensive business plan called ‘The Arc’.

To improve its competitive position and achieve the revised goals of its previously set Ambition 2030 plan, Nissan has developed a new business plan. It highlights a new model offensive and promises, among other things, to take significant additional steps in the field of electrification. The brand wants to accelerate the transition to fully electric cars, but at the same time maintain an extensive range of models with combustion engines. Nissan hopes to increase its annual sales by one million cars by around 2026. How exactly? We will go through that with you.

Over the next three years, Nissan will introduce 30 completely new models worldwide. Of these, 16 are electrified, while 14 have a combustion engine. By 2026, 40 percent of the cars Nissan sells should be electrified. However, Nissan will introduce a total of 34 electrified models through 2030. By 2030, no less than 60 percent of every Nissan sold should have an electrified powertrain.

What does that mean for the European markets? Many. Nissan will introduce six completely new models in Europe until 2030, although the brand remains somewhat vague about what you can expect. In any case, we know that a new electric successor to the Leaf and an electric replacement for the Micra are ready. Plans that concern other markets: in the Middle East, Nissan will launch five new SUVs by 2026, in India there will be three new ones, in Australia and New Zealand Nissan will introduce a compact pick-up and an electric mid-size SUV and in Africa the brand is launching two new SUVs and a new A-segmenter until 2026. In the United States and Canada, Nissan says it will renew almost 80 percent of the model range by 2026, and even 80 percent in its home country Japan.

EVs cheaper

Nissan says it wants to make electric cars cheaper by developing new electric models in ‘families’. By this, the manufacturer refers to cars that share battery packs and drivetrains, among other things. Nissan also says it will use more warehouse parts from partner brands. By 2026, electric cars should be about 30 percent cheaper than today. By around 2030, the price tags of EVs and models with a combustion engine should be comparable. Nissan continues to focus on the development of new battery packs. It promises that it will come up with new LFP batteries and even solid state batteries, among other things. New lithium-ion batteries should be able to fast charge 50 percent faster than the current Ariya packages. The LFP batteries in particular should be able to reduce costs. The first electric Nissans with new batteries – including solid state ones – should come onto the market around 2028.
