BENTHUIZEN – Bert den B. from Benthuizen has been sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for the murder of his wife in Thailand. The court decided this on Friday. Den B. was previously acquitted of the murder, which took place in 2007.

In October 2008, the remains of the then 37-year-old Rose Sulaiman, the wife of Den B, were found. The remains were in a bricked-up cesspool next to their home in Ranong, Thailand.

The Benthuizen resident had been away from Thailand for quite some time. He denies being involved in his wife’s death. In 2019, the Hague court acquitted him due to lack of evidence.

Cold case team in the Netherlands

The Public Prosecution Service appealed and demanded 11.5 years in prison two weeks ago. Previous investigation by the Thai police was taken over by a cold case team in the Netherlands, after the suspect returned to live in his home country.

A cause of death has never been determined. However, several witnesses stated that Den D. assaulted the later victim. Photos have been found showing bruises on Sulaiman’s body. At the time of her disappearance, the couple had a three-year-old son.

Last sign of life

Rose Sulaiman gave the last sign of life to her mother in two telephone calls, in which she reportedly expressed fear for her life. She also reportedly said that she wanted to come to Malaysia with her child.
