Former Ajax player Tijjani Babangida admitted to hospital after serious car accident: Brother Ibrahim passed away

Tijjani Babangida has been admitted to hospital after a traffic accident in his native Nigeria. The Nigerian Football Association reported this to various media from Nigeria. The former Ajax player is in a critical but stable condition. His brother Ibrahim did not survive the accident. The 47-year-old ex-Volendammer will be buried on Friday.

The accident occurred on the Kaduna-Zaria highway. In addition to Tiijani and his brother, Tijjani’s wife and a maid were also in the car. After the accident they were taken to a hospital in Zaria. According to the Nigerian Football Association, Babangida has now regained consciousness. Babangida was president of the Nigerian players’ union in recent years. The news of the accident was confirmed by secretary and former teammate Emmanuel Babayaro: ‘Comrades! Let us pray for our President, Tijani Babangida, who just suffered a horrific car accident along the Kaduna-Zaria road. Ibrahim Babangida, his younger brother, died in the process.’

Babangida, now 50, started his career at Roda JC in 1991. He also played for VVV-Venlo and left for Ajax in 1996. Babangida was under contract in Amsterdam until 2003 and was also rented out to Vitesse. He also played internationally for his country, won gold at the Atlanta Olympics and took part in the 1998 World Cup.
