Former Ajax player Tijjani Babangida (47) has been admitted to hospital in a critical but stable condition after a traffic accident in his native Nigeria. His brother Ibrahim, a former FC Volendam player, did not survive the accident, the Nigerian Football Association reported on Friday.

The accident happened on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. Tijjani Babangida’s wife and a maid were also in the car with the former international and were taken to a hospital.

Babangida, 50, is conscious, according to the Nigerian Football Association. He also played for Roda JC, Vitesse and VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands. Babangida played 77 matches for Ajax between 1996 and 2003. He scored 20 times.

Babangida won gold with Nigeria at the Atlanta Olympics. He also went to the 1998 World Cup with the Super Eagles.

Ibrahim Babangida is 47 years old. He played football for FC Volendam from 1997 to 2002. He was a youth international for his country and won the Under-17 World Cup with Nigeria in 1993.
