“What were we going to do if we got a prize, boys?” asks Alida Meering. The two sons, aged 5 and 3, shout in unison: “To Gold!”

About 6,000 votes were cast for the Farm Shops Awards at 456 farm shops across the country. Farm shop Bij de Boerin by Alida Meering in Stadskanaal came second. She received 321 votes.

Watching calves

At the kitchen table, Alida and her husband Jan Hendrik Deiman tell us how proud they are of this.

Jan Hendrik: “Without the store we would have enough work on the dairy farm and arable farming, but we think it is important to show people where their food comes from. Everyone can always come here to view the calves and the company. This is also used a lot.”

To expand

Three years ago, Alida started producing and selling dairy products made from their own cow’s milk.

Things went well from the start. The garden shed was soon too small, and a real shop was built in a former young cattle stable. Customers can go there for self-service until 10 p.m. Alida is often there herself. Hospitality is mentioned in the Boerderijwinkeis Award jury report. In addition to the high quality.

Bij de Boerin works together with local producers for the range.

Social function

Jan Hendrik: “Of course you want to earn something from it, but the most important thing is the social function. And we are both driven: if we do something, we want to do it well. The prize is a nice reward and consists of a plaque that comes in the mail. We will organize the rest of the party ourselves. We will participate again next year. And then we go for gold!”
