Mila Descamps (13) from Kuurne wins a prize at the 2024 Junior Journalist competition. She took first place in her category during this national writing competition with the essay ‘Oost West Cake Best’.

Every year, the David Fund challenges thousands of young writers to let their pen do the talking during the ‘Junior Journalist’ competition. This time the theme was ‘East West, Home is Best!?’ chosen. Mila Descamps used her grandmother’s delicious cake as a source of inspiration and that essay resulted in victory in her series.

One hundred young journalists were selected from the 10,000 entries from Flanders and Brussels. On Sunday April 21, the participants went to the Flemish Parliament where the winners of the national final round were announced. “I didn’t even expect to make it to the top 3 because there were so many participants from Flanders and Brussels,” says the student of the Guldenspoorcollege Harelbeke.

“I had some healthy stress, but afterwards I was very proud, just like my father, grandparents and aunt who were also present,” says Mila. In addition to the title, Mila received a diploma, cinema tickets and books to take home. The Guldenspoorcollege Harelbeke received a book voucher to supplement their school library
