A Dutch woman was arrested on Friday for involvement in the assassination attempt on far-right Spanish politician Alejo Vidal-Quadras in Madrid last November.

A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service confirmed this on Wednesday. The Public Prosecution Service says it concerns a 27-year-old woman from Den Bosch. The Dutch woman was arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant, a request from the Spanish authorities.

The Public Prosecution Service does not want to provide any details about the contents of the case or what the woman is suspected of. According to Spanish media, the charge is financing and preparing the assassination attempt in Madrid. The woman will soon be arraigned, after which the Spanish extradition request will be submitted to the court’s surrender chamber. It will make a decision within three months, according to the Public Prosecution Service spokesperson.

Vidal-Quadras is co-founder of Vox, a conservative-nationalist breakaway from the Partido Popular. He served in the European Parliament for fifteen years for that party. In 2014 he was Vox’s first European party leader, but he did not win a seat.

He was shot in the head by a man on a motorcycle in the capital Madrid on November 9. The Spanish politician survived the assassination attempt.

Spain and Colombia

In addition to the Dutch woman from Den Bosch, four suspects were arrested in Spain and Colombia. The shooter, believed to be a hitman, is still on the run.

It is not known why Vidal-Quadras was the target of an attack. The Spanish authorities have not yet communicated about the attacker’s motive.

Vidal-Quadras is convinced that the regime in Tehran is behind the attack because of its ties to the Iranian opposition.
