DENK Almere wants to pay more attention to youth workers. That is why they are looking for the youth worker of the year together with residents of Almere. From May 1, residents of Almere can nominate someone who they believe will make a difference for young people.

“We are looking for that youth worker who makes a difference by giving young people in a vulnerable position a voice. Someone who acts as a role model, helps young people tackle personal problems and stimulates talent development in young people,” says Hassan Buyatui, councilor and faction leader of DENK Almere.

A youth worker offers support to young people in their development. Youth workers do this by making contact with young people in an accessible way, motivating them and discussing, solving or identifying problems where necessary. In Almere, the De Schoor Foundation is mainly responsible for youth work. This organization works in community centers, neighborhoods and schools.

Youth workers make the difference

In 2020, the council announced that it saw a worrying trend in youth crime. This would become increasingly extreme, with increasingly younger perpetrators. This is where, according to Buyatui, youth workers can make the difference. They make a crucial contribution to selling young people to commit crimes. To give youth workers extra appreciation for their important work, Buyatui asked last year whether the municipality could create an award for ‘Youth Worker of the Year’.

Because the council did not accept the motion, DENK is now starting this action itself. According to the party, youth workers do excellent work, but few people see and appreciate it. “Almere youth workers deserve more appreciation,” says Buyatui.

To vote

All residents of Almere can nominate someone. A nomination consists of a motivation letter and a possible statement of support from others who support the nomination. Nominations can be submitted until September 1, 2024.

The winner will be announced on September 30, 2024, during For the Youth Day. If successful, DENK Almere wants to make this campaign an annual event.
