TikTok plans to earmark images and videos created with artificial intelligence (AI). The video app says it wants to try to prevent the spread of misinformation on the platform.

The company already labels AI-generated content created with tools in the app. This new step makes it possible to also mark videos and images that are generated outside of TikTok and then uploaded.

“AI offers incredible creative possibilities, but can confuse or mislead viewers if they do not know the content is AI-generated,” the social media platform explained in a statement. “Labeling helps to clarify that context. That’s why we label AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content, ed.) that was created with TikTok AI effects, and we’ve been requiring creators to label realistic AIGC for over a year.”

Watermark

To recognize the uploaded AI content, TikTok uses technology developed by Adobe and Microsoft, among others. With this technology, TikTok gives the AI images a watermark.

According to TikTok, tagging is possible from today. This will soon also apply to audio content.

Earlier this year, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, also reported that it was working on being able to label AI images. Google also said last year that AI labels will soon be seen on YouTube and other Google platforms.

A European law is coming that should lead to clear rules surrounding the biggest technological development of the moment. This was announced in March. The law determines what is prohibited and which applications of artificial intelligence are permitted, albeit under strict conditions.

Last month, musicians expressed concerns about an AI tool that produces music. There was already unrest among Dutch voice actors earlier. Supermarket Aldi replaced the voice actor in their commercials with AI. Not actor Diederik Ebbinge, but a voice generated with artificial intelligence now tells what the latest offers are.
