Meryl Streep (74) will be presented with an honorary Palme d’Alm on May 14 during the opening night of the Cannes Festival for her great contribution to the film industry. The multiple Oscar winner will be the guest of honor during the opening ceremony, the festival announced on Thursday.

“The fact that I can stand in the shadow of my predecessors makes me humble and excited at the same time”

It is only the second time that Meryl has visited the festival on the French coast. In 1989, the American star hit the red carpet for the film Evil Angelswhich won her the acting award.

“I am honored beyond words to receive this prestigious award,” she said. “Winning an award at Cannes, where so many great makers come together, is one of the highest achievements you can achieve in cinema. To be able to stand in the shadow of my predecessors makes me humble and excited at the same time.”

Meryl is considered one of the greatest living actresses. Her film resume consists almost entirely of classics: from Sophie’s Choice until Out of Africa, by The Bridges of Madison County until The Devil Wears Prada and from Mamma Mia! until The Deer Hunter. According to festival director Thierry Fremaux, ‘Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination and our shared love for the medium of film’.

The Cannes Festival takes place from May 14 to 25.
