Professional cyclist Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Dstny) is known for his cassant statements and witty comments on social medium X. But his jokes are not always appreciated. During Wednesday’s Giro stage, De Gendt sent a tweet into the world with a pun about a crash involving the Hungarian Attila Valter. And, somewhat understandably, he couldn’t really laugh about it.

It was a tumultuous day in the Giro with a series of crashes. Norwegian speed rider Tobias Foss, classification rider Daniel Martinez and French classic rider Christophe Laporte, among others, hit the tarmac hard, but continued their way with the necessary bruises and bumps. Laporte’s teammate Attila Valter also came into contact with the asphalt, about 25 km from the finish in Luca. The Hungarian got back on the bike and finished fifth last.

Just after the incident, De Gendt tweeted from his couch a photo of his TV screen showing the fall and an image of Attila Valter, one of the victims. De Gendt placed two words above the photo: ‘Who falls’

Around 6 p.m., shortly after crossing the line, Valter replied to the post with a questioning emoticon. De Gendt then clarified in English: “It’s a joke with your name. Your Dutch teammates will explain it.”

The joke apparently went down the wrong way with the Hungarian. “They explained it to me. I do not like it.” The last word went to De Gendt: “Different taste. No problem.”

Tomorrow, a ride on the Tuscan gravel roads is planned that should suit both Valter and teammate Laporte, but the question is how they will cope with today’s crashes.
