PSV’s title celebration in Eindhoven yesterday turned out to be a very unpleasant experience for a supporter. The man, who appears to be known from a Dutch TV series about problem neighborhoods, thought he was holding a torch, but it turned out to be a Cobra (a fireworks arrow) and it exploded with a huge bang.

The accident happened just before the start of the match between PSV and Sparta Rotterdam (4-2), near the Stadioncafé De Aftrap near the Philips Stadium. A fan zone had been set up there. The loud bang of the illegal fireworks in his hand caused things to go wrong for the man, the police confirm.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he underwent surgery yesterday. He may have lost several fingers. Some Dutch media even say that he has lost part of his hand.

According to a police spokeswoman, the man picked up the fireworks because he thought it was a flare. But social media shows that he received that Cobra from ‘friends’ who wanted to play a trick on the drunken supporter.

The man in question is known in Eindhoven as ‘Appie’, after he was featured in the documentary ‘Problem Neighborhoods Woensel-West 18 years later’. This is a follow-up to the controversial reality series ‘Probleemwijken’ broadcast in 2005 by the Dutch commercial channel SBS.

In a response to a message on social media, a mother states that her eleven-year-old son had to return home traumatized after that incident and that she called in Victim Support because the boy kept crying.

Just like in the Netherlands, Cobras are also illegal here because the fireworks arrows are so dangerous. Cobra is actually the name for various fireworks products from the Italian manufacturer Di Blasio Elio. Most Cobras are in fireworks class F4. Especially the Cobra 6 (28 grams of powder and 13 centimeters long) and Cobra 8 (100 grams of powder and 25 centimeters long) are well known and widely sold in Europe.
