Christian Burgess is one of the men in Belgium who has a hard time putting his money where his mouth is. In a major interview with HUMO, he gives his blunt opinion about the big teams that he believes are favored.

After the defeat against Club Brugge, he was reprimanded by the football association for his statements. “You want to say so much after a match. But it’s not allowed. I still held back, and yet I received a warning. What if I really say what I think?”, said the British defender at HUMO.

He talked, among other things, about the refereeing decisions that always seemed to benefit Club Brugge. Such as Vetlesen’s goal, who blocked a kick from goalkeeper Moris and thus scored. “A similar phase occurred at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, and the goal was disallowed. The player who had ‘scored’ even received a yellow card.”

“Bart Nieuwkoop (ex-Union player, ed.) immediately sent me a message: the same thing had happened in a Feyenoord match against NEC Nijmegen. The player didn’t even make a move, he just stood there. Yet the goalkeeper received a free kick in his favour.”

Arokodare did not keep his distance… Should I lose valuable time?

At Union they even gradually saw a conspiracy, but Burgess nuances that other teams are also affected by it. Although he did want to say something about the red card he received after throwing the ball at Tolu. “When taking a throw-in, the opponent must keep a distance of two meters. Arokodare did not do that. Do I have to wait and lose valuable time?”

“By the way, in Genk-Anderlecht, Anders Dreyer deliberately kicked the ball against a Genk player who was not 9 meters away during a free kick. That player fell to the ground. What did the referee do? Nothing. Where do you draw the line then? ?”

According to him, the referees also take status too much into account. “As a referee, do you have more respect for Jan Vertonghen, the Belgian record international? He kicks against Racing Genk, but he gets away with a warning.”
