A new week, a new match day, new questionable decisions by the arbitration and/or VAR. No: the level is not always high, at Antwerp they were white hot with anger after the defeat against Club Brugge.

Mark van Bommel thought that Antwerp should have received an extra penalty against Club Brugge, Toby Alderweireld went much further and said that the level of arbitration is simply poor in this Champions’ Play-off.

Phase between De Cuyper and Kerk is subject to discussion

The phase that will be the subject of much ink? Maxim De Cuyper made a big tackle on Gyrano Kerk in the final minutes. Everything that is red and white saw an eleven meter in that and hoped that the ball would hit the spot.

That did not happen in the end: no second penalty for Antwerp in the match against Club Brugge. A matter of interpretation, not a clear error, not a mistake? There will certainly be another debate about this in the coming days.

No penalty according to Boucaut

If it is up to former referee and current analyst Alexandre Boucaut, the referee on duty did not make a mistake. “At first I also thought it was a mistake, but you see that De Cuyper also plays the ball.”

“For me it is not of the nature that the VAR has to intervene to whistle a penalty. At such phases that is not what the VAR should do,” said Boucaut in his analysis to the RTBF on Sunday evening.
