MovieAfter twelve years, fantasy series ‘Lord of the Rings’ returns to the silver screen. The famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ character Gollum will get his own film in 2026. Andy Serkis returns as the well-known character and is also the director of the project. The announcement of the film is big news for fantasy fans.

Two new ‘Lord of the Rings’ films are on the way, Studio Warner Bros. has confirmed. Peter Jackson, the director of the original ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, is producing the films. The first of these will be shown as early as 2026, with the working title ‘Lord of the rings: The hunt for Gollum’. Film studio Warner Bros has not yet revealed many details.

Serkis first appeared as Gollum more than twenty years ago in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, based on the books of the same name by JRR Tolkien. Gollum was born as the hobbit Sméagol. He finds the ring and is transformed into the creature Gollum by the influence of the powerful jewel.

Gandalf’s return?

It is not yet clear what ‘The hunt for Gollum’ is about. In the book ‘The Fellowship of the ring’, the first part of the trilogy, there is a chapter in which the characters Aragorn and Gandalf search for the creature together. They do this because they want to know what happened to Gollum after he lost Sauron’s magic ring. Gandalf wants to use his knowledge of the ‘One Ring’ to understand the fate of Middle-Earth (the world of Lord of the Rings, ed.) and determine how they can destroy the Ring. This part of the book ultimately did not make it into the film. It is possible that Peter Jackson now wants to dedicate a separate film to this.

In the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films, Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen play the roles of Aragorn and Gandalf respectively. Ian McKellen (84) said a few years ago that he wanted to play Gandalf one more time before his death. Fans are speculating a lot on social media about the possible return of the beloved wizard. It is not clear whether Bafta winner Viggo Mortensen (65) is interested in stepping into Strider’s shoes again. Nor is it known whether the film will be shot again in New Zealand, like all previous films.

When is the last movie?

Peter Jackson’s last ‘Lord of the Rings’ project was ‘Battle of the Five Armies’ (2014), the third and final part of the Hobbit trilogy. This leaves a twelve-year gap between that film and this upcoming project.

Later this year, the second season of the Amazon series ‘Rings of Power’, a prequel series to ‘Lord of the Rings’, will be released. The Warner Bros team is not involved in this project.
