Minister of Education Ben Weyts (N-VA) has concluded a five-year management agreement with the ‘Stichting Canon van Vlaanderen’. This independent foundation is responsible for the management and further development of the Canon of Flanders. For example, a French translation and a project with historical maps are in the pipeline. The foundation receives a grant of 310,000 euros per year.
The much-discussed Canon of Flanders was presented at the beginning of May 2023. The Canon provides an overview of anchor points in the history, culture and sciences of Flanders in 60 windows. Despite the sometimes turbulent start-up, the Canon was largely positively received and subsequently proved to be a sales success. It was the best-selling nonfiction book for months, eventually ending up as the second best-selling book of last year. There were already ten editions, good for more than 30,000 copies sold.
To manage and further develop the Canon, a Canon of Flanders Foundation was previously established. In recent months, the Foundation has provided, among other things, an audio version of the Canon for the blind and partially sighted, a version tailored to low-literate Flemish people and recently an English translation for the international audience.
Weyts has now concluded a five-year management agreement. In this way, the Foundation will receive the necessary security and resources to monitor the Canon and set up follow-up projects until at least March 2029. For example, a French translation and a project with historical maps are in the pipeline. The website can also be further expanded and additional audiovisual material can also be added.
