Man behind ‘the dress that broke the internet’ abused his wife for eleven years: “She really thought he was going to kill her”

Keir and Grace Johnston’s wedding dominated the internet for several weeks in 2015: there was worldwide debate as to whether the dress his mother-in-law had bought for the occasion was blue and black or white and gold. Behind the scenes, however, life was a lot less fun for Grace Johnston: according to British justice, she was abused by her husband for eleven years. For example, he once strangled her after she applied for a job against his wishes. “He placed both of his knees on her arms so she could not move,” the prosecutor described the incident. “He then started to strangle her with both hands. She feared for her life, she really thought he wanted to kill her.”

Johnston initially denied the charges but has since pleaded guilty. The man will be told what punishment he will receive on June 6, but he will remain in custody pending.
