A pressing feeling down there. As if something needs to come out. You may not want to know, but yes… A slight prolapse is quite normal after a vaginal birth, it turns out. And you may also suffer from it during your pregnancy. It usually gets better on its own with time. Your muscles in your pelvic floor will then become stronger again.

But if you notice after giving birth that you have symptoms that indicate a more severe prolapse, it is wise to contact your doctor. Because that’s no fun. It can really feel like something is slipping out of you, for example when you are exercising. It can also occur during your pregnancy.

Here are some signs that may indicate a prolapse:

1. A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvic area: This may feel like a sensation of something pushing down or protruding into the vagina.

2. A visible bulge in the vagina: This can occur while straining, coughing, sneezing or lifting heavy objects.

3. Pain or discomfort during intercourse: This can occur due to the pressure placed on the prolapsed organs.

4. Problems with urination or defecation: This can range from difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels completely to urinary or fecal incontinence.

5. Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections: A prolapse can affect the urinary tract and make it more difficult to empty the bladder completely, which can lead to recurring infections.

If you experience one or more of these symptoms, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination to assess the severity of the prolapse and advise you on possible treatment options, such as pelvic physiotherapy, wearing a diaphragm or in some cases, surgery. It is always best to take the symptoms of prolapse seriously and seek medical attention early to avoid complications.
