Marthe still absent from K3 musical ‘The 3 piglets’: Charlotte Campion fills in, but who is she?

LtdIt is the third day in a row that Marthe De Pillecyn has to miss the performances of ‘The 3 piglets’. Once again there is uncertainty about when the K3 will join her colleagues Julia Boschman and Hanne Verbruggen on stage. Ticket holders should not fear, because actress Charlotte Campion (32) is filling in for Marthe again. But who exactly is Charlotte?

While Marthe is recovering, according to Studio 100, Charlotte Campion shows the best of her acting talent as the piglet Knirri during the performances in Breda, Netherlands. She is Marthe’s understudy: the substitute who takes on the role in unforeseen circumstances. But Charlotte is anything but unknown in the musical world, moreover: you have seen her at work more times than you think. Her list of roles is lengthy.

She took her first steps in the musical world in 2002, at a very young age. Then she played Gretl in ‘The Sound of Music’, Little Sleeping Beauty and she also played Fleur in ‘Tintin: the Sun Temple’. Her singing talent also brought her to the semi-finals of ‘Eurosong for kids’, with the song ‘Hey kids hier’.

But Charlotte caught the theater bug: she continued her studies at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, musical department. She graduated from there in 2013, after which she worked her way to the top with roles such as Cinderella in ‘Cinderella, the Pretty True Story’, Marie in ‘The Sound of Music’ and Bonnie in ‘Bonnie & Clyde’. She once again used her singing skills as a voice actor. Charlotte lent her voice to Nala in the Dutch version of the live action film ‘The Lion King’. You can also hear her in other films and series. For example, she is the singing voice in the song ‘Superster’ by Olly Wannebe.

But TV-watching Flanders will certainly recognize her face: James Cooke enlisted Charlotte for ‘James the musical’, in which he musically retells the life story of BVs. Charlotte could imagine herself as Natalia and Karen Damen, among others, in the episodes. A special adventure, Charlotte said in ‘Dag Allemaal’: “Natalia told James that she was very happy that I had played her. She thought I was a good singer.”

Charlotte devotes herself fully to her passion for musicals, but that is difficult for her family life. The actress is together with fellow actor Mike Wauters and together they have two children: Billie and James. Mike has also appeared on stage several times in various musicals and last year also had a guest role in ‘Thuis’ as Olivier Das. He will certainly understand the irregular schedule that comes with acting. “’James the Musical’ was extremely tough. We are working on it all summer and then all my time is spent on the program,” Charlotte said in an interview with our newspaper. “Then my children go from babysitter to babysitter. I love my family, but I also love my job. They are my two passions. But look, it’s hard work, but the results pay off.”

There is no better substitute for Marthe than Charlotte, although fans online hope that the K3 will feel better soon and can portray her grumpy character again. It remains unclear when that will be. Two more shows will follow in Breda on Saturday. The performance will take place in the Stadsschouwburg in Antwerp from May 9.
