The 74-year-old Streep is a true Hollywood legend, with no fewer than 21 Oscar nominations. That’s a record. She also managed to receive three nominations: for her roles in ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ (1979), ‘Sophie’s Choice’ (1982) and ‘The Iron Lady’ (2011). Streep made her appearance once again in Cannes. That was 35 years ago with ‘A Cry in the Dark’. She received the award for best actress for her role in that film.

Streep will bump into jury president Greta Gerwig in Cannes. He directed the 2019 costume drama ‘Little Women’, which also featured Streep.

According to Thierry Fremaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival, Meryl Streep is “part of our collective memory and our common love for cinema”.

Two other big names will also receive an honorary Palme d’Or in Cannes this year: ‘Star Wars’ director George Lucas, and Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli.

This year’s Cannes festival takes place from May 14 to 25.
