Current presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump are 81 and 77 years old, respectively. Bernie Sanders is also from the same generation, who unsuccessfully wanted to become the Democratic presidential candidate in 2016 and 2020. Sanders is 82, but that won’t stop the Vermont politician from running for a fourth term as senator.
Bernie Sanders is the longest-serving independent in the history of the US Congress, but leans heavily towards the Democratic party. In 2016 and 2020, he also tried to win the nomination as presidential candidate for the Democrats. The first time he lost to Hillary Clinton, the second time to Joe Biden. He was a member of the House of Representatives for sixteen years (from 1991 to 2007). He was elected as a senator in 2006, and then re-elected in 2012 and 2018. And now he wants to run for a fourth term.
In his announcement video, he talked about “the most consequential election in our lifetimes.” He added: “Will the United States continue to function as a democracy, or will we move toward an authoritarian form of government?” Sanders is Jewish himself, but is critical of the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the war in Gaza. Sanders believes Israel has the right to defend itself against the October 7 “heinous” attack and hostage taking by terrorist group Hamas, “but it has not done so and it has no right to wage war against the entire Palestinian people, and that’s exactly what it’s doing now.”
“In my opinion, American taxpayers should not give billions more to Netanyahu’s extremist government to continue its devastating war against the Palestinian people,” he added.
