The two royal horses that were injured last week after running amok in London are doing slightly better. The British army reports in an update on X that the health of the horses is improving after surgery.

It was a hallucinatory image last Wednesday in London. The black horse Quaker and the white horse Vida ran through the streets of London. The white horse was covered in blood. Stunned passers-by couldn’t believe their eyes and ran away or looked on in bewilderment.

The two horses belong to the stables of the British royal family. These are horses of the so-called Household Cavalry. These horses are trained by the military for months and ride through the streets of London to get used to heavy traffic and loud noises, including gun salutes and military bands.

Noise on construction site

But on Wednesday things went completely wrong. During an exercise on the Horse Guards Parade, the horses were suddenly startled by noise at a yard. When debris from a construction site fell to the ground right next to the horses, a total of five animals broke loose. Four horses threw their riders from their backs and bolted. During a crazy ride through the streets of London, the horses that broke loose collided with a number of vehicles. The video footage above shows how a taxi and a tour bus were severely damaged.

In bad condition

Horses Quaker and Vida were seriously injured in the incident. Defense Minister James Cartlidge told Sky News on Thursday that the condition of the two horses was “serious”. They were in bad shape.

But in the meantime, fortunately, the two horses are doing better. Both animals underwent surgery in recent days, the British military said. Quaker’s condition in particular has now “significantly improved” and the animal is expected to make a full recovery. The other horse, Vida, is also making progress. However, he remains under close supervision while his wounds heal.

Two more soldiers in the hospital

A number of soldiers were also injured in the London incident. Two of them are still being treated in hospital, but will make a full recovery. The rest have now returned to work.

“Healing takes time,” said another army spokesman. He asks the public for patience. “The soldiers and the horses receive the very best care.”
