Traffic institute Vias advocates smaller margins for speed trap checks. They want the margin to be no more than 3 km/h. Today that margin is 6 km/h for speeds over 100 km/h. In other words, on the motorway you can only be flashed at a speed of more than 127 km/h. What do you think? Is a stricter margin a good idea? Tonight we will bundle your most interesting responses in a new piece. Read below what some experts think.

Stef Willems from VIAS Traffic Institute:

According to Vias, the margin is far too wide. The institute advocates a reduction to 3 km/h or 3 percent above 100 km/h, as is also the case in the Netherlands. According to the traffic institute, the measuring devices work much more accurately than before. This means that a wider margin of error is no longer necessary.

Vias spokesperson Stef Willems emphasizes that he is not advocating more fines. “The point is that more people adhere to the speed limit through enforcement. A lower tolerance will certainly reduce the average speed. Especially in built-up areas, driving a little slower can immediately make a big difference in terms of impact. One in three fatal traffic accidents is still due to inappropriate or excessive speed,” says Willems.

Georges Gilkinet, Minister of Mobility (Ecolo):

Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) is “absolutely in favor of the disappearance of that correction”. “It is good for road safety and coherence,” he says. Although the proposal will no longer be realized one and a half months before the elections this government period.

Marianne Verhaert, Open Vld representative:

“Without adjustments to the fine system, this is a bad proposal,” says Verhaert. “You cannot give a fine of 53 euros for the smallest speed violation and reduce the speed correction to 3 km/h. This way you meet the ordinary driver again.”

Wouter Raskin, N-VA:

Raskin thinks it is a wrong signal “to make collecting fines even easier without first talking about reforming the fine system to tackle recidivism more efficiently and harder.”

Joris Vandenbroucke, Forward:

“The speed limits are there for a reason,” says Vandenbroucke. “Not to issue as many fines as possible, but for the safety of everyone.”
