The idyllic private island of 453 hectares off the west coast of Scotland was once visited by the Scottish King Robert the Bruce and the Norwegian King Hacon. Now the island, which is accessible by boat or helicopter, is being sold for around 2.9 million euros.

For that you get a lighthouse and seven houses. Four on the north side and three on the south side. A total of 26 people can stay on the island. Enough people to fill the Byron Darnton Tavern, the pub sold with the island.

Own pub

Byron Darnton Tavern takes its name from a ship that sank off the island’s coast in 1946. It was founded in 2003 by previous owners Dick and Meg Gannon and served customers arriving by boat for a number of years, but it closed after the island was purchased by Swiss businessman Michi Meier in 2010.

The pub “received a lot of press coverage and was open during the summer months,” Tom Stewart-Moore, head of rural agency for Scotland at Knight Frank, the agency handling the sale, told IPS. CNN. “The next owner can use it for a private getaway or to diversify and make some money by offering it as high-end accommodation. The pub can also be reopened, offering an opportunity for people sailing along the West Coast to stop off.”

The pub still has an alcohol license, should the next owners want to revive the tavern.

Sheep, birds and stamps

Isn’t a pub enough? Then there is good news for animal lovers because there are also a total of 55 sheep on the island. There used to be a farm on the island and the animals still feel completely at home there. “The sheep look after themselves, they are the lawn mower of the island and require little management,” says Stewart-Moore. “They are included in the sale.”

In addition to cattle, there is also game. Bird watchers can enjoy the colonies of puffins, kittiwakes, cormorants, tufted shags, razorbills and many more feathered residents.

As if all this wasn’t charming enough, Sanda is also known as “Spoon Island”, due to its resemblance to an upside-down spoon. It is also one of the few Scottish islands to print its own stamps.

The island is 23 meters high at its highest point and on a clear day you can see Northern Ireland’s Antrim Hills, some 30 kilometers away. Campbelltown, in Scotland, is the main access to the island by boat and has a large marina, several whiskey distilleries and Scotland’s oldest cinema.

Private or commercialize

Most of the accommodation on the island has been recently renovated, with new double glazing. “Currently, energy is generated on the island by three generators,” says Stewart-Moore. “However, subsequent owners will have the opportunity to explore renewable energy sources to supplement or improve the island’s electricity supply.”

He says they have already received “a large number of viewing requests.” “The potential buyers will mainly fall into two categories: either a wealthy individual will buy it to use for themselves and keep private. Or it will be someone who wants to commercialize the pub and buildings, expand farming activities on the land and possibly become self-sufficient.”
