In the southern American state, the Republican-dominated parliament last year gave the green light to a ban on abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy. Today, abortion is illegal after fifteen weeks in Florida.

After 900,000 people signed a petition, the Florida Supreme Court ruled on the case. That made two separate statements. In an initial ruling, it ruled that a law by Governor Ron DeSantis banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy would come into effect within a month. In another ruling, it said the final decision rests with the voters. They will be able to vote in November on whether the right to abortion should be enshrined in the constitution. The voting takes place at the same time as the voting for the presidential elections.

Biden said in a statement that restricting abortion “endangers the health and lives of millions of women” because they cannot receive “much-needed care.”

Spearhead in election campaign

Biden has made protecting the right to abortion a spearhead in his election campaign against his Republican predecessor Donald Trump. His campaign team had already emphasized on Monday that “this extreme new ban – for which Donald Trump personally paved the way – will mean a ban for the entire southeast (of the country, ed.).”

In the United States, it is common for voters to cast ballots simultaneously for presidential and legislative elections and for local issues. If this amendment passes with at least 60 percent of the vote, it will be added to the Bill of Rights of the Florida Constitution.
