The Belgian army will contribute to the protection and security of the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Minister of Defense Ludivine Dedonder announced this on Tuesday. Exactly how many soldiers will be sent to France has not yet been confirmed.

It is the French government that has put the question to the Belgian authorities. Defense has “studied the participation and has concluded that a contribution can be considered in the context of the 2024 Operations Plan,” said Minister Dedonder.

The Belgian military would mainly be called upon to carry out missions related to “searching for and neutralizing explosives”, or in short, demining. “It is recognized that the Belgian Defense has expertise in this area and is regularly called upon for international interventions,” the PS minister explains.

No details are yet known about the number of soldiers sent to France and the duration of the mission. The Olympic Games in Paris run from July 26 to August 11, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
