Behavioral biologist Patrick van Veen was candid at the end of the season. He mentioned that editors sometimes steer him in a certain direction when making a match for Married at first sight. While he himself would have liked to have more peace and time. According to him, everything has to be done very quickly. There was a disagreement, but no lawyers were involved, he emphasized.
Boszhard writes in his Televisioncolumn: ‘To remove all noise immediately: the experts determine who will be matched, not the program makers. There can of course be friction about the how and what of this process, but I have great faith that we can resolve this together. But it is certainly not true that someone is cast because it produces spectacular television.’
With a look back at his first years with the program, he tries to provide more clarity about what goes on behind the scenes. He had conversations with people who he hated to participate in the RTL program. ‘And also my TV heart really started beating more for one person than for the other. But if there was no match that the experts believed in, the party would not go ahead.’
Although one couple remains married this season, Boszhard knows that things have to be different. ‘Of course things can and should be better and that is why I hope for a reliable new method of attraction. That does not immediately bring us love, of course, but perhaps more passion. And it is with the same passion that I will enter the tenth season next year with the team and experts.’
