Mike Vanhamel is not in the Beerschot competition core due to threats on social media

Mike Vanhamel did not get on the team bus to Roeselare this afternoon. The 32-year-old goalkeeper is again the first choice under the bar at Beerschot this season, but he has been receiving threats and curses from supporters for months via social media.

Since he lost his captaincy and starting position last season for extra sporting reasons, Vanhamel has been the head of Jut for the supporters of Beerschot. The fact that his replacement Wouter Biebauw made it clear when he left that he only wanted to stay with Beerschot if Mike Vanhamel was to leave, has reinforced that feeling. Vanhamel kept his lips tight, though he was eager to respond himself. However, the club has refused to give him any interviews about the situation.

In recent weeks, Beerschot has played two home games without an audience and an away game against SL16 at Sclessin, where the visiting supporters are far from the field. Club NXT, today’s opponent of Beerschot, plays its home games at Schiervelde in Roeselare and there the visiting supporters are very close to the field, behind one of the two goals. Due to concrete threats, Vanhamel himself has decided not to be in goal today. The Croatian Davor Matijas may therefore make his debut.
