First gold for TeamNL at Classic European Championships: Swertz untouchable in 47/2

--

The combined European Championship One Cushion, Kader 47/2 and Kader 71/2 started relatively cautiously for TeamNL with one bronze in the one cushion for the favorite Netherlands, for Raymund Swertz.

In the first cadre discipline of this European Championship, Swertz felt like a fish in water and rushed to European gold.

CERVERA – “He will take revenge within the framework.”

A rather strange comment after someone won a bronze medal at a European championship, but it was nevertheless heard frequently after Raymund Swertz’s bronze in the one cushion.

And: it turned out to be true! Limburger Raymund Swertz raced through the tournament in the 47/2 frame he loved so much. In the group stage, his three matches took only six innings in total, and that included an unexpected 179-200 defeat in three innings against Patrick Niessen, the top player on behalf of Belgium who trains – or has trained – so many Dutch people.

With a match in one turn, Swertz rushed from the group stage to the quarter-finals, and then passed the strong Willy Gerimont in three turns and with the bizarre figures of 2-250. In the semi-final against the equally strong Esteve Mata, Swertz needed ‘unprecedentedly long’ for the 250 caroms, namely four turns. (Note: this is still an average of 62.50!) But in the final it was old-fashioned again. Swertz defeated the person who had defeated him in the group stage, Patrick Niessen, in one turn: 42-250. And for those who don’t know exactly what this means: it means that Swertz didn’t miss a single time in the entire final! And over the entire tournament, six games in total, he only had 9 misses – or an average of one and a half misses per game.

These are bizarre figures, phenomenal actually. And that is exactly what Raymund Swertz is in the classic games: phenomenal.

Of the other two Dutchmen here in Spain, Michel van Silfhout was eliminated in the quarter-finals, and Micha van Bochem in the group stage. This means that after two European Championships, TeamNL has one bronze and one gold, both for the classic phenomenon Raymund Swertz.

Tomorrow the final event of this European Championship, the frame 71/2, will start in the small but cozy, well-filled hall in Cervera. Top favorite is a man from Afferden who rarely misses in the frame: Raymund Swertz.
