The season is fading for TOP Oss. The club knows that Ruud Brood’s team will end up with the lowest number of points since the 2015-2016 season after a dramatic evening at Jong PSV: 4-1.
Expectations were still so high at the start of the season. TOP Oss lost only once in the preparation and that fueled the hope in the Frans Heesen Stadium of a place somewhere in the middle bracket – and perhaps even more. But the optimistic supporter was soon disappointed.
It became a season like they often experienced in Oss, dangling in the basement of the Kitchen Champion Division. The grumbling among the supporters soon started. The team was even last in the rankings for a while. The reasons for this are known: a whole battalion of new players and an overcrowded infirmary. Brood repeatedly had to ask the medical staff: who can I line up for this match? It presented him with a complicated puzzle every week.

TOP Oss experienced a revival after the winter break and a flashy start to the fourth period, but those memorable moments could not prevent a sad final ranking. The supporter who hoped for better times quickly longed for the end of a disappointing season.
Maximum 36 points
Last year, TOP finished in 17th place in the KKD, with 37 points. This meant the worst final ranking since the 2015-2016 season, when the club under Reinier Robbemond took only 29 points and finished nineteenth.
And this year? A maximum of 36 points and again place 17 are still possible if NAC is beaten on the last matchday. But anyone who looked at number 19 in Eindhoven saw those three points evaporate before the match was even played.
TOP immediately suffered a setback at the Herdgang: Grad Damen, the scorer of the 1-1 against Jong AZ a week earlier, was injured in the warm-up. Sven Zitman replaced him for a dull first half that only got going just before half time thanks to Jong PSV. Goalkeeper Mike Havekotte, alertly responding to few opportunities, had no answer to Mohamed Nassoh’s penalty inside the post after a handball from Giovanni Korte): 1-0.

What plan did Brood come up with for the second half? Joshua Zimmerman and Abel Stensrud. TOP Oss did not play any better. Jong PSV actually moved further away thanks to two goals from Jevon Simons within six minutes. Nassoh went one better with a second penalty, which was caused by Xander Lambrix after a foul on the edge of the penalty area: 4-0.
There was a goal of honor on an otherwise dramatic evening thanks to substitute Konstantinos Doumtsios, who punished some fiddling by Jong PSV keeper Kjell Peersman: 4-1. One more match and then the focus is on next season. With Sjors Ultee as head coach there is a breath of fresh air and as always, supporters hope for better times in Oss.
