Anyone with a dynamic energy contract can again benefit from negative energy prices on Wednesday. Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., prices drop below zero, just like last Sunday, giving them money to use energy.

Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., the electricity price in our country is below zero. We see the peak around 3 p.m., when the price reaches a low of -123.18 euros per megawatt hour. Wind farms and other energy players now have to pay to lose their power. People with a dynamic energy contract benefit from this. Anyone who has a classic fixed or variable energy contract will not notice this on their energy bill.

The fact that the price falls below zero is exceptional, but not unique. Last weekend, people with a dynamic energy contract were also able to benefit from negative prices. Since 2019, energy experts have seen electricity prices increasingly fall below zero every year. This is due to the rise of renewable energy, expert Dieter Jong told this newspaper a few weeks ago.

Not only we, but also our solar panels can enjoy the radiant sun again since this week. Together with the wind turbines, they have been generating energy at full speed in recent days. So much that there is a surplus of energy. In addition, today is a public holiday and there are therefore many fewer industrial major consumers who purchase electricity from the grid.

People who have a dynamic energy contract can benefit from that surplus today. They can respond directly to current prices and are therefore paid to consume energy today. The impact of these negative energy prices on other energy contracts will be small.
