A 28-year-old man from Roosendaal has been sentenced to four years in prison for reckless driving. He was responsible for an accident in 2022 in Oud Gastel in which four people died. After his prison sentence, he is not allowed to drive for ten years, the judge ruled.

The Public Prosecution Service had demanded 8 years in prison against Omar E. who drove at high speed on a major road with a maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour on September 2, 2022. He hit a car with five people inside. Two mothers and two children were killed.

E. was driving a rented Mercedes when the accident happened. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. E.’s lawyer argued that the 28-year-old man was not to blame, because he was driving on a priority road and the traffic lights were out of order that day.

Dangerous driving

The judge disagrees. According to the court, the accident was entirely due to the driving behavior of Omar E. The computer data of the rental car showed that he was driving 155 kilometers per hour just before the collision.

According to Omroep Brabant, the court emphasized that the man himself was responsible for creating a dangerous situation. The court found the defense that he wanted to avoid the other car by pressing the accelerator pedal hard to be credible.
