News site El Confidencial announced earlier today that a judge has started an investigation into the ties of Begoña Gómez, Sánchez’s wife, with private companies that received money or orders from the state.

In a letter published on “Is this all worth it?” he wonders. “Honestly, I don’t know.” The Social Democrat wants to announce his decision on Monday.

Extremely right

The court investigating Gomez did not provide further details, saying only that the reason was a complaint from the organization Manos Limpias (Schone Handen), a campaign group that claims to be committed to combating fraud and whose leader has ties to the extreme right. Previously started processes by this organization have led to nothing.

The stories about Sánchez’s wife have been widely reported in Spain for weeks, especially by news websites that have a critical attitude towards the Sánchez government. Sanchez in turn accuses opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo (Partido Popular) and Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right party Vox, of an ‘intimidation campaign’.

‘Not naive’

According to Sánchez, it is clear that his wife has not done anything illegal, but is only being dealt with because she married him. ‘I’m not naive’.
