New innovative show formats to air on network starting Thursday, April 4

Washington, DC (April 1, 2024) – Monumental Sports Network (MNMT) announced today a slate of live alternate broadcasts for Washington Capitals and Wizards games on the local media platform. Through the end of the 2023-24 seasons, five alternate Capitals broadcasts and three Wizards alternate broadcasts will be available to sports fans throughout the DMV region, starting on Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 PM ET when the Capitals play the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“We’re excited to experiment with new alternate broadcast formats for our fanbase,” said Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises at Monumental Sports & Entertainment. “This complimentary live viewing experience demonstrates our commitment to doing more with our live rights than ever before while also super serving our fanbase.”

The alternate broadcasts will follow a format similar to ESPN’s “ManningCast” broadcasts and will feature a rotation of engaging and knowledgeable hosts, analysts, and special guests. Viewers will be treated to real-time analysis of the live games and engaging conversation about the Capitals and Wizards and other hot topics around the NBA and NHL, featuring live data and stats with a dynamic L Bar presentation on screen.

Regularly appearing talent for the Capitals alternate broadcasts include Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan, former Capitals forward and Stanley Cup champion Devante Smith-Pelly, former Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau, and Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network. On the Wizards side, regularly appearing talent includes JP Finlay of 106.7 The Fan, NBC 4 WRC, and MNMT, former Wizards center and current MNMT analyst Jason Smith, former Wizards play-by-play announcer Steve Buckhantz, and University of Maryland men’s basketball hall of famer Greivis Vásquez.

“Our new production facility and studio grant us the opportunity to innovate around the live viewing experience for our fans. I believe that these initial alternate broadcasts are only a precursor to what will be developed as soon as next season.” added Leonsis.

The alternate broadcasts represent the latest step in Monumental Sports Network’s overhaul of its programming lineup since purchasing the network from NBC Universal in August 2022, including multiple new in-game enhancements, new original programming, and additional on-air talent. The network currently offers fans access to multiple camera angles during live home games, with additional functionality including the ability to rewind and watch in slow motion.

Capitals and Wizards alternate broadcasts will be available both on linear TV (on overflow station MNMT2) and via Monumental’s digital streaming platform within the network’s footprint. Fans can watch the broadcasts through their Pay TV subscription, on monumentalsportsnetwork.com, or by downloading the Monumental streaming app on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV and using an eligible TV Everywhere log-in.

For fans without a Pay TV subscription, in October, Monumental Sports Network unveiled direct-to-consumer (DTC) subscription memberships for viewers seeking to access Monumental Sports Network’s live and on-demand programming. For fans interested in a DTC subscription, Monumental Sports Network will offer a free preview of the network’s live games between April 2-4. Between April 2-30, fans will be able to purchase discounted annual memberships ($155) at monumentalsportsnetwork.com/welcome or by downloading the Monumental Sports Network app.

In August 2022, Monumental Sports & Entertainment acquired full ownership of NBC Sports Washington from Comcast/NBC Universal. The station was rebranded Monumental Sports Network in September 2023 with a new slate of programming. In November, Monumental Sports Network announced partnerships with several local universities to air 50 college basketball games on the network during the 2023-24 season. The network also broadcasts live college football, college volleyball, high school basketball, esports, and recently announced a slate of Washington Spirit (NWSL) and Old Glory DC (Major League Rugby) games set to air this spring and summer.
