Reborn KRC Genk delivers a heavy blow to Union and jumps over Club and Antwerp: Champions’ Play-offs are now completely open

--

KRC Genk won 1-0 against Union SG on Monday evening. This victory makes Genk and Anderlecht the winners of the weekend.

KRC Genk and Union SG opened their Champions’ Play-offs on Easter Monday. Wouter Vrancken surprised and completely shook up his team. Genk started with three defenders. Strongman Heynen was not there either. Vanhoutte and Lazare Amani join the team at Union.

Genk, without Heynen who had abdominal muscle problems, started the match extremely well. The Limburgers started the game with a lot of drive.

Union also got the ball a lot, but Genk attacked surprisingly well. After fifteen minutes of play, Tolu walked alone towards Moris, but kicked at the goalkeeper.

Shortly before the half hour this happened again. Tolu was sent deep with a ball that appeared to have been kicked too far. However, Moris made a mistake and simply stayed in his goal. When it was already too late he still came out, but Tolu put the ball in the goal with great control.

Even after the break, Genk continued to play good football, although Union was clearly looking for the equalizer. The best chances were for the visitors.

Genk moved further back, and that paid off. Union had difficulties creating real chances. Castro-Montes was able to sneak through the Genk defense once, but did not capitalize on the opportunity.

Genk played a match with a lot of commitment. The first half was especially impressive from the Limburgers. There was something missing at Union.

Just before the end, Burgess received a red card because he threw the ball into Tolu’s face during a throw-in. Double blow for the people of Brussels…

With this victory, KRC Genk suddenly climbs to third place in the rankings with 27 points. Union is no longer in first place. Anderlecht ends the matchday as leader and is the big winner of this weekend.
