These LEGO sets are based on real space travel

--

If you’re looking for a LEGO spaceship, you’re probably looking at Star Wars sets. But those who are enthusiastic about space travel in the real world also have plenty of sets to choose from, often courtesy of NASA. This is currently available.

Space Shuttle Discovery

The Space Shuttle is among the most recognizable spacecraft ever made. That is also allowed after more than 30 years of loyal service. The first shuttles took to the air for the first time in the 1980s and it was not until 2011 that the last one was grounded for good. The shuttle Discovery serves as inspiration for a LEGO set.

Discovery has launched several satellites into space, including the Hubble Space Telescope. The telescope is therefore included in this set. Together, these nicely detailed models account for more than 2,300 bricks and therefore provide a few hours of building fun.

Artemis Space Launch System

Man hasn’t been to the moon in a while, but NASA is working to change that. But of course we can hardly get an old Apollo from the stable. That is why we are working on a new vessel, called Artemis.

It has not yet been manned into space, but an unmanned mission has already been successfully carried out in 2022. The Artemis launch system used will soon be available as a LEGO set. It has happened before that the rockets of, for example, a shuttle have also been included in a LEGO set, but this is the first time that the entire structure that takes astronauts on board is also part of a set.

Mars Rover Perseverance

The Artemis missions should ultimately help NASA get someone to Mars. There is great interest in this planet and several unmanned Rovers are already driving around to conduct research.

Perseverance is the latest and LEGO has decided to build it from LEGO Technic. That is not unjustified because the rover has many moving parts that come into their own in a Technic set. Take, for example, the axle system that allows the rover’s wheels to turn and turn in different ways.

Space Shuttle

There are also smaller sets around space travel. There is a very small and also cheap Space Shuttle set. You can also convert this into two other models.

One is a small astronaut, which is pretty much what an astronaut looks like in real life. The other is a more fanciful spaceship. In terms of design, this is a bit more at home in fictional space travel, but it is a nice bonus.

Space Astronaut

The astronaut takes center stage in another 3in1 set. This also matches what an astronaut looks like in real life. But the alternative models are both made up this time.

Once again there is a spaceship that looks very science fiction-like. The other is a little dog with a funny space suit. That is admittedly not entirely fictional: Laika in particular is a well-known case of a dog in space. But this dog doesn’t seem to be based on Laika or any of the other dogs that have been in space and, unlike Laika, survived.
